Helium

Helium describes a community-operated wireless network for IoT devices and mobile connectivity.

Project description based on its own documentation.

Profile sources checked: . This date refers to the introduction, not a network observation.

About the project

Helium’s documentation describes participants operating hotspots that carry wireless traffic. The network includes LoRaWAN for IoT and Wi-Fi that offloads mobile carrier traffic.

IoT with LoRaWAN

The IoT network serves sensors and devices with small data payloads. Helium’s IoT page describes applications and points to equipment from different manufacturers.

Mobile traffic over Wi-Fi

The mobile network uses Wi-Fi hotspots and connected existing Wi-Fi networks. Participants supply a location, power and internet access. The documentation describes rewards for eligible data traffic and service-quality requirements.

HNT and network use

Helium’s documents describe HNT as the network token and as rewards for hosts and operators. Burning HNT creates Data Credits used for network fees. This description reflects the project's documentation and does not state an expected return.

Check participation requirements

Read the official guides for your chosen network and equipment before installation. For existing Wi-Fi networks, Helium covers Passpoint and onboarding. Check the current requirements and reward rules for the chosen setup.
